Client has problems opening a file created in another application

Problem: Client receives a file with an unknown extension and is having problems opening it up in Word 2000.

Resolution: To assist you in knowing what are the different extensions for word processing applications, below is a table with a few extensions and their corresponding applications.

Application Extension
Ami Pro/Word Pro SAM
Word Perfect WPD
Adobe Acrobat PDF *
Rich Text Format RTF
Write WRI
Postscript PS *
* These formats are not supported in Word 2000

In order to be able to open these files in Word 2000, you must the corresponding text converters installed on your PC. The easiest way to see if your Word 2000 can open these files is to click on File and then Open. In the Open dialog box, click on the Files of Type dropdown box and see if the file format is there. If the file format is not there, then the text converter for that application must be installed on your PC.

Strange codes appear when opening a file directly from Word

Problem: When a Word file is opened directly from within Word (File – Open), client reports having strange codes and characters appear in the document. If someone else opens it, it looks fine.

Resolution: Client probably has Recover Text from any File in the Files of Type drop down in the Open dialog box. Have them change it back to Word documents and reopen the file. It should open fine now.

How do you save to another format from Word 2000

Problem: Client wants to save the Word document they’re working on to a file format such as Word Perfect 5.0 or Word 6.0.

Resolution: Click on File and then Save As. In the Save As window, click on the Save As Type dropdown box and select the file format you want. If the file format is not there, use Rich Text Format as your format. RTF files can be opened in most applications.

Client needs multiple files converted to Word 2000

Problem: Client has 2 or more files in a format other than Word 2000 and wants to convert them quickly.

Solution: There is a Batch Conversion Wizard in Word 2000 that allows you to convert 2 or more files into Word 2000 rather quickly. On the File menu, point to New, and then click on the Other Documents tab. Click Batch Conversion Wizard, and then click OK. Follow the instructions on the screen to run the Conversion Wizard.
